Is Wax Paper the Same as Parchment Paper?

In a bakery kitchen, parchment paper is a common essential. It’s chemically treated to make it over-safe and heat resistant. By contrast, wax paper is ordinary wood pulp-based paper which is coated in a thin layer of paraffin wax – the same wax used commonly in candles. As such, wax paper is not heat-resistant. The wax coating keeps food from sticking and is perfect for serving prepared foods. Wax paper is ideal as sandwich wrap or as a protective layer that soaks up grease from fried foods.

Can Wax Paper Go in the Oven?

No, wax paper is not oven safe! Unlike parchment paper, wax paper will burn and even ignite in the oven much like regular paper. Reach for aluminium foil for an oven-safe food wrap instead.
